In Japan, we use the Western Calendar, which is a solar calendar with 12 months of 28 to 31 days each.
The names of months in the Japanese language is very easy as we just use the number from 1 to 12 and add gatsu, which means the moon, and looks like 月 in Kanji (Chinese character).
The numbers from one to three in Kanji is very simple as well; 1 = 一, 2 = 二, and 3 = 三, therefore 一月 is January, 二月 is February, and 三月 is March.

日本（にほん）では西暦（せいれき）であるひと月（つき）が２８日（にち）から３１日（にち）の１２ヶ月（かげつ）の太陽暦（たいようれき）を使（つか）っています。
日本語（にほんご）の月（つき）の名前（なまえ）はとても簡単（かんたん）で、１から１２までの数字（すうじ）に「月（つき」の音読（おんよ）み「がつ」、漢字（かんじ）で書（か）くと「月」を付（つ）けるだけです。
漢字（かんじ）の数字（すうじ）の１から３もとても簡単（かんたん）で、１は一、２は二、３は三ですから、一月（いちがつ）が January, 二月（にがつ）が February, 三月（さんがつ）が Marchです。
確（たし）かに、一年（いちねん）の最初（さいしょ）の３ヶ月（さんかげつ）はあっという間（ま）に過（す）ぎますね。
The Lunar New Year
Japan stopped celebrating the Lunar New Year in 1868 when the Meiji Restoration happened. That said, I hear Okinawa and some rural areas where the flow of the tides are closely related to for their means of living, farming and fishing, are still celebrating the Lunar New Year.
In China, Taiwan, South and North Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Mongolia, and other parts of Asia are celebrating their New Year today, February the first, 2022. Happy New Year!

We say, “Happy New Year” to wish someone to have a good year before and after the new year has arrived. If you try to Google translate “Happy New Year’ into Japanese, you probably see “Akemashite omedetoogozaimasu!” or “ Shinnen, omedetoogozaimasu’. However, we don’t say those greeting words until the year changes to the new year. Also, you can’t use “shinnen” and “akemashite” continuously as this “akeru” means “to end” and what is ending is the passing year, not the new year.
If you would like to wish someone to have a good year before the new year arrives, you can say, “Yoi o-toshi o o-mukaekudasai.’ or “Yoi toshi ni narimasuyooni.”
明（あ）けましておめでとうございます。
本年（ほんねん）もどうぞもどうぞよろしくお願（ねが）いいたします。
英語（えいご）では、良い年（よいとし）を祈（いの）って年（とし）が明（あ）ける前（まえ）にも明（あ）けてからもハッピーニューイヤーと言（い）います。ハッピーニューイヤーを日本語（にほんご）に訳（やく）すと、「明けましておめでとうございます」か「新年（しんねん）、おめでとうございます。」になりますが、これらは新年（しんねん）が来（き）てからいう挨拶（あいさつ）で、年（とし）が明（あ）けるまでは使（つか）いません。
年が明けるまでに言う場合には、通常（つうじょう）、「良（よ）いお年（とし）をお迎（むか）えください。」とか「良（よ）い年（とし）になりますように。」と言（い）います。
「明けましておめでとう」の意味（いみ）は、「明ける（あける）」は「終わる（おわる）」と言（い）う意味（いみ）で、一年（いちねん）を無事（ぶじ）に終（お）えることができ、新年（しんねん）を迎（むか）えることができて、おめでとうございますと言う意味です。

When Covid restriction allows us, please come to experience a Japanese winter at my private classroom setting.
You can enjoy Hot pot (with salmon with vegetables and Tofu or without salmon if you are vegan) or Takoyaki (with shrimp instead of octopus).
We will play Karuta, Japanese playing cards, and watch a Japanese TV show sitting at the Kotatsu (low Japanese table with a heating element).
Booking maximum is 3 people with full-vaccination.

My Birthday…
A group of three students gave me a cute birthday card and nice gifts for my birthday. The card has a cute picture of 4 people and the first one on the right looks like me! The first one on the left looks like Jessica-san, next her is Christian-san, and next to me is Beth-san.
The card was written all in Japanese and it was very well written! They know me so well and how to make me smile.
三人（さんにん）グループの生徒（せいと）さんたちが私（わたし）の誕生日（たんじょうび）にかわいいカードとプレゼントをくれました。そのカードにはかわいい四人（よにん）の絵（え）が描（か）いてあって、一番右（いちばんみぎ）が私のようです。いちばん左（ひだり）がジェシカさん、その隣（となり）がクリスチャンさん、そして私の隣はベスさんのようです。
そのカードは全部（ぜんぶ）日本語（にほんご）で書（か）いてあって、とても良（よ）く書けていました。みんな私のことをとても良く知（し）っていて、私を笑顔（えがお）にしてくれます。
Charlotte’s Cupcake
Charlotte is 9 years old and she has been studying Japanese with me since September. She is such a fast learner and she surprises me with her knowledge of the Japanese language.
This Monday, she and her mother baked cupcakes for me and gave them to me as a gift. They were soft and very tasty. I love the paper bag that she put the cupcakes in as well. It has a message in Japanese, “Cupcakes for Yoko” with many smily-face stickers and she drew a beautiful red flower with a silver outline.

Wedding Anniversay
September 24 was one of my students, Bethany-san and her husband, Melvyn-san’s first wedding anniversary. Jess-san and Christian-san from the Group Japanese Language Lesson, also gathered together before our lesson. We celebrated their first wedding anniversary by having some home-made sushi and taiyaki from Cafe Taiyaki52. We also enjoyed miso-soup made of Robert-san’s Miso. Thank you, Robert-san!

９月２４日（くがつ にじゅうよっか）は私（わたし）の生徒（せいと）のひとり、べサニーさんとご主人（しゅじん）のメルヴィンさんの初めて（はじめて）の結婚記念日（けっこんきねんび）でした。おなじ日本語（にほんご）グループ・レッスンのジェスさんとクリスチャンさんもレッスンの前（まえ）に集（あつ）まってくれました。手作り（てづくり）のお寿司（すし）とカフェ・たい焼（や）き５２のたい焼きでお二人（ふたり）のお祝い（いわい）をしました。それから、ロバートさんがつくってくれたお味噌（みそ）でつくったお味噌汁（みそしる）も美しくいただきました。ありがとう、ロバートさん！

Today, I bought some chopstick rests at the Ikebana Shop.
今日（きょう）、私（わたし）は生け花ショップさんで箸置き（はしおき）を買（か）いました。
They are both in the shape of cute cats, but you can find many other different figurine chopstick holders. They keep the tip of the chopsticks lifted from the table to keep both chopsticks and the table clean before, during, and after eating your meal as it’s not good manners to rest your chopsticks on the plate or bowl. I enjoy collecting them, and I clean them right after using them.
その箸置き（はしおき）はかわいいねこの形（かたち）をしていすが、他（ほか）の形（かたち）のもたくさんありました。箸置きは食事（しょくじ）の前（まえ）、食事中（しょくじちゅう）、そして食事の後（あと）もお箸をそのうえに置（お）いて、お箸やテーブルをきれいに保（たも）つのに使（つか）います。私は箸置きを集（あつ）めるのが好き（すき）で、使（つか）った後（あと）すぐに洗（あら）っています。
Robert’s Red Miso
One of my students, Robert-san, loves cooking Japanese dishes. He made Red Miso paste (Dark-brown miso paste) , which was matured more than 18 months, and kindly shared some with me. Thank you very much, Robert-san!
私（わたし）の生徒（せいと）のロバートさんは日本食（にほんしょく）を作る（つくる）のが大好き（だいすき）だそうです。ロバートさんは１８ヶ月（１８かげつ）熟成（じゅくせい）して赤味噌（あかみそ）を作って（つくって）、私にお裾分け（おすそわけ）してくれました。

五目(ごもく)かやくご飯(はん)
先週(せんしゅう)の木曜日(もくようび)に、カナダに来(き)てから初(はじ)めて五目(ごもく)かやくご飯(はん)を作(つく)りました。
これは、先日(せんじつ)母(はは)と姉(あね)とスカイプで話(はな)していて、父(ちち)がよく作（つく）ってくれたおいしいかやくご飯(はん)の話(はなし)になったからです。
Last Thursday, I cooked Gomoku-kayakugohan for the first time since I moved to Canada.
This is because when I spoke with my mother and sister on Skype the other day, we spoke about the delicious kayakugohan my father used to cook.
父(ちち)は料理(りょうり)が得意(とくい)で、よく家族(かぞく)のためにかやくご飯(はん)やお弁当(べんとう)を作(つく)ってくれていました。
帰国(きこく)中(ちゅう)、旅行(りょこう)がちだった私(わたし)のためにも、新幹線(しんかんせん)の中(なか)で食(た)べるようにと、お弁当(べんとう)をよく作(つく)ってくれました。
My father was good at cooking, and he used to cook kayakugohan or bentō for us. While I was visiting my family in Japan, he often made bentō for me as I travelled a lot with Shinkansen (Japanese Bullet Train).
そんな優(やさ)しかった父(ちち)を思(おも)い出（だ）しながら作(つく)ったかやくご飯(はん)でしたが、やはり父(ちち)には勝(か)てませんでした。
I made kayakugohan thinking of my sweet father, but it was not nearly as good as his.
